The Myth

Athena was born when she sprang, fully grown and armed, from Zeus’s forehead. Zeus had laid with Metis, the goddess of wisdom and cunning thought, but feared the consequences soon after. A prophecy said that Metis would bear children more powerful than their sire, more powerful than Zeus himself. To prevent this, Zeus swallowed Metis, but she was already pregnant.

Born inside Zeus’s stomach, Metis raised Athena inside the other God, until Hermes cleaved Zeus’s forehead and from that wound with a thunderous battle cry sprang Athena, in full armor. From that day she was Zeus’s most favored daughter even sharing his weapons, the thunderbolt and the Aegis, along with her own spear, shield and helmet.

Athena has never taken a lover and has remained a virgin, giving her the title Athena Parthenos. However, Athena does have a foster son, Erichthonius. Hephaestus attempted to rape Athena, but she managed to escape him. His semen fell on the ground and Gaia, the Earth, became pregnant. Erichthonius was born from Gaia and the Goddess gave him to Athena to raise. He is usually depicted as the serpent that coils at the bottom of her spear.

The Aspects

Athena, as the goddess of Wisdom, has a quick wit and a sharp tongue. She best known as a wise counselor. She advises many great heroes on their quests, including Hercules, Perseus, and most notably Odysseus. Those she favors she will advise and lead to greatness. However, those that cross her are punished severely. Medusa desecrated her temple and Athena turned the once beautiful woman into the snake haired monster of legend and then aided Perseus in slaying her.

In battle Athena’s tactical skills are nearly unstoppable. More disciplined than Ares, she is always calm and collected, but absolutely fearless. Creator of the chariot, she always charges into battle with one led by a team of horses. She carries a spear as her main weapon, but can also call on thunderbolts like her father. Her armor is a goat skin breastplate known as the Aegis and a shield with a Gorgon head on it, known as the gorgoneion. She is often seen with Nike, the Goddess of Victory and is attended by an owl.
